Christian Home Educators of
West Virginia

Schools and CHEWV are limited as to number of participants in each category. For example, CHEWV may have 4 participants in the Sacred Piano category at the Senior High level, and 3 at each of the Junior High/Elementary levels. There is a likelihood that more CHEWV students register than can be accommodated, therefore, entries will be critiqued to choose the best qualified entrants to represent CHEWV. To aid in this critiquing process, the following requirements are necessary.
- All registrants MUST be CHEWV members.
- At the time the registration is submitted a video (VHS or VHS compatible) or DVD and a photocopy of the music/speech selection must be submitted. All Art entries must include picture(s) and plans/description of the artwork.
****To meet this requirement takes advance planning. Although the entry (music, speech, or art) does not have to be completely perfected at the time of registration, it does need to be of a quality for critiquing. For example, music and speech entries may not yet be memorized or the art may only be 40% completed. Meeting this requirement will help assure that the student is on a time schedule for a successful performance and there is not a last minute rush in preparation. ****
- Due to the above requirement NO registrations will be taken over the phone.
Category Participation
A complete listing of available categories and a synopsis of each is under the Category tabs at the side of the page. Failure to comply with any rules will be cause for disqualification. Please note that the categories for Junior High/Elementary levels are not as broad as for the Senior High. Students may participate in 6 (5 for Junior High/Elem.) events on the day of the Festivals, plus have 3 art entries and take 5 academic tests.
ART
*Art entries must be taken to the Fine Arts event by 9:00 a.m. on the day prior to the festival.
There is a limit of 3 art entries per student. The entrant is responsible to have the artwork delivered on the Thursday prior to the Festival day at the appropriate location by 9:00 a.m. and to assure the entry is ready for display.
The artwork is to be displayed with the Artist Idea Statement (located here) and a 3 x 5 index card taped to the back of the entry. The 3 x 5 card must have the following information:
- Student’s School Name (CHEWV)
- Category – prefaced by ELEM (Elementary), JH (Junior High),

or SH (Senior High)
Music, Art, and Speech
Please be aware that there are restrictions on music, art and speech themes. Music is restricted to sacred, spirituals, patriotic, American folk, semi-classical, or classical. Contemporary Christian, gospel rock, gospel country, jazz or music in like vein will not be permitted. Speech is restricted to material of good taste, high quality, and from reputable authors. Speech or Art which reflects anti-biblical themes or content, sensualism, humanism, or worldliness will be disqualified.
CHEWV also has instituted an additional restriction concerning piano categories. Since the piano categories are the most popular entered, CHEWV restricts participation to one entry of a piano category per person. An exception will be made when the deadline has elapsed and the category(ies) has not been filled. The coordinator must know prior to the registration deadline that an entrant is interested in registering for more than one piano category. There must be a first choice clearly marked on the registration form.
Testing
Academic tests are taken several weeks prior to the festival. There is a limit of 5 academic tests per student. The tests are mailed to the entrant’s home and administered by the parent. The parent is then responsible for returning the completed test to the WVCEA office by the deadline. This process is done by the honor system.
Performance Times
The Senior High Festival is on the second Friday of March at Appalachian Bible College in Beckley, WV. The Junior High/Elementary Festival is usually on the fourth Friday in April at announced locations.
A Festival may be postponed due to bad weather.
Times of performances on the day of the festival are scheduled by WVCEA. The volunteers at WVCEA are working with a large number of participants, so performance time requests cannot be made. This day should be set aside as Festival Day. Be prepared to travel and to be flexible. It is possible to have a 9:00 a.m. performance time and the Festival’s location be 3 hours from your home.
